Program Coordinator Quickstart

For: Program Coordinator | Tier: Standard / Pro

As the designated HazCom program coordinator, you're the person OSHA holds responsible for your company's hazard communication program. Tellus is built around OSHA's six-step HazCom framework, so every step in your compliance obligation maps directly to a feature in the platform.

This guide walks through each step and shows you where to go in Tellus.

OSHA's 6-Step HazCom Program

Step 1: You're the Coordinator

Your admin assigned you as the program coordinator during the onboarding wizard. Under 29 CFR 1910.1200, your employer must designate a responsible person to oversee the HazCom program. That's you.

Your name and contact information appear on official compliance documents, including the Written HazCom Program. If you need to update your details, go to AdminHQ or ask your admin.

Step 2: Create Your Written HazCom Program

Every employer with hazardous chemicals must have a Written Hazard Communication Program. In Tellus, you create this using Plan Builder. The platform asks you targeted questions about your operations and AI-generates a plan tailored to your industry, chemicals, and sites.

See HazCom Plan Guide for a complete walkthrough.

Step 3: Verify Your Chemical Inventory

OSHA requires a list of every hazardous chemical in your workplace. Open ChemIQ and confirm that every chemical at each site is accounted for. If something is missing, use Quick Import to add it or ask site managers to submit products they find on-site.

Step 4: Manage Your SDS Library

Every hazardous chemical needs a current Safety Data Sheet accessible to employees. Go to ChemIQ and check the SDS Library. Tellus tracks SDS coverage per site and flags chemicals that are missing an SDS. Your goal is 100% coverage across all sites.

Step 5: Check Workplace Labels

Secondary containers -- anything that isn't the original manufacturer's packaging -- must carry GHS-compliant labels. Tellus generates labels for your chemicals that you can print and apply. Work with your site managers to identify containers that need labels.

Step 6: Verify Employee Training

Every employee who works with or near hazardous chemicals must be trained. Go to SafePath and review the training matrix to confirm that all employees have completed their assigned courses and that certifications are current.

See Training Guide for details.

Ongoing Responsibilities

Your job doesn't stop after initial setup. As coordinator, you should regularly:

  • Review the Insights dashboard for compliance gaps
  • Ensure new chemicals are added to the inventory with SDSs
  • Confirm new employees complete training before handling chemicals
  • Update the Written HazCom Program when your operations or chemicals change
  • Prepare for inspections by reviewing compliance readiness scores
