SDS Library
Module: ChemIQ
Your SDS Library is the central hub for every Safety Data Sheet in your organization. Instead of hunting through filing cabinets, binders, or scattered folders on a shared drive, Tellus gives you a searchable, AI-parsed library where every SDS is available instantly — from any device, at any location.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200(g), employers must maintain a Safety Data Sheet for every hazardous chemical in the workplace and make them readily accessible to employees during their work shifts. Meeting these SDS requirements is one of the most common areas where organizations fall short during inspections. Your SDS Library keeps you compliant with that requirement while also powering the rest of ChemIQ — PPE recommendations, compliance checks, quantity calculations, and label printing all depend on the data extracted from your SDSs.
Key Features
What Is an SDS?
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a standardized 16-section document that describes a chemical product's hazards, safe handling procedures, emergency measures, and regulatory status. Under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), every manufacturer and distributor of hazardous chemicals must provide an SDS with their products.
Library List View
Your SDS Library displays all uploaded documents in a searchable list:
- Product name and manufacturer for each SDS
- Parse status — whether AI has finished extracting data
- Review status — whether the parsed data has been reviewed and confirmed
- Upload date and uploaded by
- Starred/favorite indicator for quick access to frequently referenced documents
Use the filter bar to narrow results by:
- Product name or manufacturer (text search)
- Parse status (
Parsed,Pending,Failed) - Review status
- Date range
Single Upload
Upload one SDS at a time using drag-and-drop:
- Navigate to ChemIQ > SDS Library
- Click
Upload SDS - Drag and drop a PDF file (or click to browse)
- Tellus begins AI parsing immediately
- Within minutes, all 16 sections are extracted and structured
- Review the parsed data and approve
Bulk Upload
Have a stack of SDS files to upload? Use bulk upload to process them all at once:
- Collect your SDS PDF files into a single ZIP archive
- Navigate to ChemIQ > SDS Library > Bulk Upload
- Upload the ZIP file
- Tellus processes each PDF individually — you can watch the progress
- Review each parsed SDS and approve or flag for correction
AI Parsing — All 16 GHS Sections
When you upload an SDS, Tellus uses AI to automatically extract and structure the data from all 16 GHS sections:
| Section | Title | What Is Extracted |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Identification | Product name, manufacturer, recommended use, emergency phone |
| 2 | Hazard Identification | GHS classification, signal word, hazard statements, pictograms, precautionary statements |
| 3 | Composition / Ingredients | Chemical names, CAS numbers, concentration percentages |
| 4 | First-Aid Measures | Treatment for inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, and ingestion |
| 5 | Firefighting Measures | Suitable extinguishing media, specific hazards, firefighter PPE |
| 6 | Accidental Release Measures | Spill containment, cleanup procedures, environmental precautions |
| 7 | Handling and Storage | Safe handling practices, storage conditions, incompatibilities |
| 8 | Exposure Controls / PPE | Exposure limits (PEL, REL, TLV), recommended PPE for hands, eyes, skin, respiratory |
| 9 | Physical and Chemical Properties | Appearance, odor, pH, flash point, boiling point, vapor pressure, density |
| 10 | Stability and Reactivity | Chemical stability, conditions to avoid, incompatible materials, decomposition products |
| 11 | Toxicological Information | Routes of exposure, acute and chronic health effects, LD50/LC50 values |
| 12 | Ecological Information | Aquatic toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulation potential |
| 13 | Disposal Considerations | Waste disposal methods, contaminated packaging disposal |
| 14 | Transport Information | UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, packing group |
| 15 | Regulatory Information | US federal and state regulatory status (TSCA, CERCLA, SARA, Prop 65) |
| 16 | Other Information | Revision date, version, disclaimer, abbreviations |
This extracted data powers everything else in ChemIQ — from PPE recommendations (Section 8) to regulatory compliance (Sections 3 and 15) to label printing (Section 2).
SDS Detail View
Click any SDS to see its full detail page:
- Parsed data organized by GHS section, presented in clean, readable format
- Original PDF — download or view the original document at any time
- Hazard pictograms displayed prominently with signal words
- Composition table with CAS numbers and concentration ranges
- Version history — see previous versions if the SDS has been updated
- Linked inventory items — which chemicals in your inventory use this SDS
Version Management
Chemical manufacturers periodically update their SDSs. Tellus supports version tracking:
- Upload a new version of an existing SDS — the old version is archived, not deleted
- View version history to see what changed between revisions
- Inventory items automatically reference the latest version
- OSHA requires you to maintain the most current SDS — version management helps you stay current
Starring and Favorites
Star your most-used SDSs for quick access. Starred documents appear at the top of your library, making it easy to pull up the SDSs your team references most often.
Who Uses This
| Role | What You Can Do |
|---|---|
| Admin | Upload, manage, delete SDSs across the entire organization |
| Manager | Upload and manage SDSs; review parsed data |
| Program Coordinator | Upload and manage SDSs as part of compliance program maintenance |
| Employee | View and download SDSs (read-only access — fulfills OSHA's "readily accessible" requirement) |
