Add a Chemical to Inventory
For: Admin, Manager, Coordinator | Tier: All plans
Adding a chemical to your inventory creates a record of what you have, where it is stored, and how much is on hand. Tellus gives you three ways to do this, depending on whether the product is already in your catalog or SDS library.
Prerequisites
- You must have Admin, Manager, or Program Coordinator role
- At least one site and location must be set up in your organization
- For the "From SDS" method, the SDS must be uploaded and parsed first
Steps
Method 1: Add from Product Catalog (Fastest)
- Navigate to ChemIQ > Inventory
- Click
Add Chemical - Select
From Catalog - Search for the product by name or manufacturer
- Select the product from the results
- Choose the site and location where the chemical is stored
- Enter the quantity on hand and the unit
- Click
Add to Inventory
Method 2: Add from SDS
- Navigate to ChemIQ > Inventory
- Click
Add Chemical - Select
From SDS - Search your SDS library by product name or manufacturer
- Select the SDS — product name, manufacturer, and hazard data are pre-filled
- Choose the site and location
- Enter the quantity and unit
- Click
Add to Inventory
Method 3: Manual Entry
- Navigate to ChemIQ > Inventory
- Click
Add Chemical - Select
Manual Entry - Enter the product name and manufacturer
- Add any known CAS numbers (optional but recommended for regulatory linking)
- Choose the site and location
- Enter the quantity and unit
- Attach an SDS from your library if available (optional)
- Click
Add to Inventory
Expected Result
The chemical appears in your inventory list, associated with the site and location you selected. If an SDS is linked, hazard classifications, GHS pictograms, and regulatory flags are applied automatically. Compliance checks run in the background.
Tips
- Duplicate detection — If Tellus finds a potential match to an existing inventory item (same product, same site), you will see a warning. Review the match before creating a duplicate.
- From Catalog is fastest — If the product is already in your catalog, this method pre-fills everything except site, location, and quantity.
- Missing SDS? Upload one before adding the chemical for the best experience — it enables PPE recommendations, compliance checks, and label printing.
- Bulk entry? Use Quick Import for photo capture or barcode scanning when adding many chemicals at once.
