Add a Chemical to Inventory

Adding a chemical to your inventory creates a record of what you have, where it is stored, and how much is on hand. Everything happens on a single Add Chemical page: you pick how you want to identify the product, confirm the details, and decide whether to track quantity at a site right away or just save the product to your catalog for later.

Prerequisites​

  • You must have Admin, Manager, or Program Coordinator role
  • To track quantity now, at least one site must be selected in the header (locations are optional)
  • For the Import SDS method, the SDS must be uploaded and parsed first

The Add Chemical Page​

  1. Navigate to ChemIQ > Inventory and click Add Chemical (or go to ChemIQ > Product Catalog and click Add Product — both open the same page).
  2. Pick a method to identify the product using the buttons at the top:
    • From Catalog — search your company's product catalog and select an existing product
    • Scan Barcode — scan or type a barcode; Tellus looks it up against your catalog and a global product database
    • Capture Label — photograph the product label (up to five images) and let Tellus AI read the product name, manufacturer, container size, and more
    • Import SDS — search your SDS library and pull product name, manufacturer, and hazard data from the parsed sheet
    • Voice Input — coming soon
    • Or click Don't see your product? Enter manually to type all the details by hand
  3. Confirm the product. If Tellus resolves a product you already have, it appears as a compact card. If it is new, you get an editable form — fill in at least the product name and manufacturer (CAS number, product code, and container details are optional but recommended).
  4. Attach an SDS (optional). The resolved product shows an Attached or No SDS yet status. If none is attached, click Attach SDS to pick one from your library. Linking an SDS unlocks hazard classifications, PPE recommendations, and compliance checks.
  5. Decide with the Add to inventory now? toggle:
    • Toggle on — you also track this specific stock. Enter the container size and unit, the number of containers, an optional location within the selected site, and any notes. Click Add chemical to save the product and the inventory record together.
    • Toggle off — the product is saved to your Product Catalog only. No quantity, site, or location is required. Anyone on your team can add stock from it later.

Expected Result​

If the toggle was on, the chemical appears in your inventory list, associated with the site and location you selected. If it was off, the product appears in your Product Catalog, ready to stock at any site later. Either way, if an SDS is linked, hazard classifications, GHS pictograms, and regulatory flags are applied automatically and compliance checks run in the background.

Tips​

  • Catalog-only is the "Add Product" path — Leaving the Add to inventory now? toggle off is how you add a product to your catalog without recording any stock. There is no separate Add Product page anymore.
  • Duplicate detection — When you create a new product, Tellus checks for similar existing entries and shows any matches so you can pick the right one instead of creating a duplicate.
  • From Catalog is fastest — If the product is already in your catalog, selecting it pre-fills everything, so you only add the site, location, and quantity.
  • Missing SDS? You can still save the product and inventory now, then attach an SDS later — but attaching one up front enables PPE recommendations, compliance checks, and label printing.
  • Capturing in the field? Workers with quick-import access can open the same page preset to Capture Label or Scan Barcode; their entries go to the Review Queue for a manager to approve. See Quick Import: Capture a Photo and Quick Import: Scan a Barcode.
