Public SDS Portal

Module: ChemIQ

The Public SDS Portal turns your SDS Library into a customer-ready, employee-ready, OSHA-defensible distribution channel — without anyone needing a Tellus login.

Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200(g), you have two SDS-sharing obligations that rarely get talked about together:

  • External: every shipment of a hazardous chemical you manufacture or distribute must include the current SDS for the receiver.
  • Internal: every employee must have SDS "readily accessible during each work shift" in their work area.

Both problems traditionally get solved the same painful way: email PDFs on request, maintain a paper binder, or stand up a separate SDS portal that drifts out of sync with your actual inventory.

The Public SDS Portal solves both with the SDS data you already have in Tellus. Flip a product to public, and three things happen automatically:

  1. The product gets a permanent, shareable URL.
  2. It appears in your company's branded catalog at sds.tellusehs.com/{your-slug}.
  3. It can be added to a printed QR-code poster for any of your sites — for unauthenticated employee access during shifts.

No re-uploading. No second system. No outdated PDFs.

What's In the Portal

Branded Company Catalog

A single URL — sds.tellusehs.com/{your-slug} — that lists every SDS you've chosen to publish. Visitors can search across product name, CAS number, manufacturer, and even the parsed text inside the SDS itself. Branded with your logo, your primary color, your contact info, and your disclaimer.

See Company Catalog Page.

Per-Product SDS Pages

Each published product also has its own permanent page at sds.tellusehs.com/{your-slug}/{product-slug} with the full hazard summary, GHS pictograms, H/S/E severity ratings, first-aid info, and the latest SDS PDF download. This is the page your QR codes, share links, and search engines land on.

Site Access Posters

Printable QR-code posters scoped to a single site. Employees scan the poster with their phone and see the SDS list for their workplace — no login, no app install. Designed for the warehouse floor, the chemical storage room, the spray booth.

Portal Branding

A four-field admin panel that customizes the catalog and per-product pages with your logo, primary color, contact info, and a disclaimer override. Color choices that fail WCAG AA contrast are rejected automatically — your branding can't accidentally make your safety information unreadable.

See Branding Your Portal.

Visit Your Portal

Once you've claimed your slug and published a product, the admin Portal Config panel shows a Visit link that opens your live catalog in a new tab. Use it to preview before sharing, sanity-check branding, and to grab the URL you'll send to customers.

See Visiting Your Portal.

Who This Is For

The Public SDS Portal is designed for any company whose work touches OSHA HazCom, EPA FIFRA, or the EPA Worker Protection Standard — but a few customer profiles get the largest immediate value:

You are...The portal saves you...
A chemical manufacturerThe "send me the SDS" inbox — point customers at your catalog URL
A distributorPass-through SDS obligation across hundreds of SKUs
A cleaning or janitorial supplierThe 6-hour-a-week PDF-email job your office manager does for client facilities
An agricultural supplierEPA-label-plus-SDS distribution to growers under WPS
A pest control operatorA QR-coded customer leave-behind that points to the current SDS, not a stale paper handout
An EHS Manager at any workplaceA defensible, OSHA-aligned answer to "where do employees access SDS during their shift?"

How It Works

The portal is off by default. You turn it on per company by claiming a slug — a short, URL-friendly name that becomes the address of your catalog.

  1. Claim a slug. From ChemIQ > Public SDS Portal, choose something like acme-chemicals or cleanpro. We check it for conflicts and validity in real time. See Claiming Your Slug for the character rules and the 7-day activation lock.
  2. Configure your emergency contact. A 4-field contact record (name, type, phone, role label) is required at either the company or site level before any product can publish or any poster can be generated. See Setting Up Your Emergency Contact.
  3. Brand it. Add your logo URL, primary color, contact info, and (optionally) a disclaimer override. WCAG contrast is checked live.
  4. Publish products. From the product catalog, toggle individual products to Public. Products with flagged SDSs are hard-blocked; pending SDSs require an explicit override with a written reason (logged in your audit trail). See Publishing a Product for the full pre-flight gate list.
  5. Share the URL. Your catalog goes live at sds.tellusehs.com/{your-slug} the moment a single product is published.
  6. (Optional) Generate site access posters. For each physical worksite, generate a QR-coded poster scoped to that site's inventory. Employees scan the poster and see only the SDS for their workplace. See Site Access Posters.

The Visit link in the admin Portal Config panel opens the live catalog in a new tab whenever you need to preview or share it.

What's Never Exposed

Public visibility is opt-in per product and limited to what OSHA already requires to be freely shared. The portal never exposes:

  • Inventory quantities (numbers — only an in-stock / out-of-stock badge appears on site posters)
  • Storage locations within a site
  • User accounts, internal notes, or roles
  • Pricing, suppliers, or purchase data
  • Products you haven't explicitly published

Public per-product pages and the company catalog are scoped at the company level — they're tied directly to your product catalog, not to any specific site or stock level.

Availability

The Public SDS Portal is included on every Tellus EHS account on the Standard plan and above. Branding, search, posters, and per-product publishing are all included — no per-page or per-view limits.
