Plan Insights

For: Admin, Coordinator | Tier: Standard+

Plan Insights monitors the health of your Written Hazard Communication Program. It tracks which plans are active, which are expired or stale, when they were last approved, and whether any are waiting for review. Your HazCom plan is the backbone of your compliance program — Plan Insights makes sure it stays current.

OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200(e)) requires every employer to develop, implement, and maintain a written hazard communication program. Inspectors check whether your plan exists, whether it's current, and whether it reflects your actual workplace conditions. Plan Insights gives you continuous visibility into all three.

Plan Status Overview

The top of Plan Insights shows a summary of all your HazCom plans:

  • Active plans — Plans that are published and current
  • Expired plans — Plans that have passed their review date without being updated
  • Draft plans — Plans that are in progress but not yet published
  • Pending approval — Plans that have been submitted for review and are waiting for sign-off

Each plan status is color-coded:

  • Green — Active and current
  • Yellow — Approaching review date or pending approval
  • Red — Expired or overdue for review

Days Since Last Approval

This metric tracks how long it has been since each plan was last reviewed and approved. OSHA doesn't specify a mandatory review interval for HazCom plans, but industry best practice is to review your plan at least annually — and whenever there is a significant change to your chemical inventory, work processes, or facility layout.

Plan Insights displays a timeline for each plan showing:

  • Last approved date — When the plan was most recently approved
  • Days since approval — A running count since that date
  • Recommended review date — Typically one year after the last approval

When a plan approaches its recommended review date, Tellus generates a warning alert in the Compliance Center and sends a notification to the plan owner and the Program Coordinator.

Version History

Every change to your HazCom plan is tracked. Plan Insights shows the complete version history for each plan:

  • Version number — Sequential version tracking (v1, v2, v3, etc.)
  • Date published — When each version was made active
  • Author — Who created or last edited the version
  • Approver — Who approved the version
  • Change summary — A brief description of what changed between versions

This audit trail is valuable during inspections. If an inspector asks why your plan changed, you can show exactly what was updated, when, and who approved the change.

Pending Approval Flags

When a plan is submitted for approval, it appears in the pending approval section. This is especially important for organizations where plans require review from multiple stakeholders — the Program Coordinator, a site manager, or an executive.

Plan Insights shows:

  • Which plans are awaiting approval
  • Who the assigned reviewer is
  • How long the plan has been waiting
  • Whether the reviewer has been reminded

If a plan has been pending for more than 7 days, Tellus escalates the alert from info to warning and sends a reminder notification to the reviewer.

Plan Review Reminders

Tellus automatically tracks review intervals and sends reminders when your plans are due for their annual review:

ReminderWhen It Fires
90-day notice90 days before the recommended review date
60-day notice60 days before the recommended review date
30-day notice30 days before the recommended review date
Overdue noticeOn and after the recommended review date

These reminders go to the Program Coordinator and the plan author by default. Admins can adjust notification preferences in their profile settings.
